Course Description

Overview:

One of the compelling benefits of using G Suite Basic is that you can leave the server hardware management responsibilities to Google. As the administrator of a G Suite domain, you can control the accounts, resources, and apps from a web browser interface. All of your administrative tasks can be accessed from a specialized page, or console, of dashboard controls. From this Admin console, you can perform all the necessary duties of a domain administrator without having to worry about keeping the physical hardware up and running. In this course, you will learn about creating and managing a G Suite domain.

You can also use this course to prepare for the Google Certified Associate—G Suite Administrator certification exam.

Course Objectives:

In this course, you will set up and manage the G Suite environment for users.

You will:

  • Navigate the G Suite Admin console.
  • Create and manage user accounts.
  • Use organizational units to manage your G Suite environment.
  • Configure and implement Drive storage settings and policies.
  • Manage mail delivery, routing, and filtering.
  • Create groups to share mailboxes and documents, and manage permissions and roles.
  • Set up and manage calendar sharing and calendar resources.
  • Manage the mobile devices that access your system.
  • Use reporting tools to manage usage and security, and to troubleshoot system issues.
  • Configure security and authentication policies and methods.

Target Student:

This course is designed for business users or IT professionals who need to set up and administer a G Suite domain by creating and managing users, organizational units, groups, calendars, shared resources, and mobile devices. Managing mail routing and delivery, configuring G Suite apps and services, monitoring account activity and apps usage, and maintaining security are included to facilitate communication and collaboration in a secure environment.

Prerequisites:

To ensure your success in this course, you should have experience with using a web browser, such as Google Chrome™, and using G Suite. Knowledge of domain administration terminology will be helpful, but not a requirement. You should be familiar with working in a cloud-based productivity suite, such as G Suite. You can obtain this level of skills and knowledge by taking the following Logical Operations courses:

  • Using Google Drive™ and Productivity Apps
  • Google Cloud Fundamentals

Course-specific Technical Requirements

Hardware:

For this course, you will need one computer for each student and one for the instructor. Each computer will need the following minimum hardware configurations:

  • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Keyboard and mouse (or other pointing device)
  • 1024 × 768 resolution monitor recommended
  • Internet access (contact your local network administrator)
  • Projection system to display the instructor's computer screen

Optional Hardware:

  • One or more mobile devices (Android™, iOS®, or Windows®) would be useful for the "Configuring and Securing Mobile Devices" lesson.
  • A Chrome™ device and associated license would be useful for the "Configuring and Securing Mobile Devices" lesson.

Software:

  • Each student needs a registered domain name and the ability to verify ownership. Domain names can be acquired for the classroom in one of the following ways:
    • The training center can purchase a registered domain name for each student for a fee from Google or from a third-party domain name reseller.
    • Students can bring their own registered domain names and verify their ownership during the G Suite account setup.
  • If necessary, software for viewing the course slides (instructor machine only).
  • Windows 10 operating system.
  • Google Chrome™ web browser (configured to delete History on exit).

Domain Name Requirements:

This course was designed for each student to have a unique domain name that they can use to set up and manage their G Suite accounts. At the end of the class, you must delete the G Suite accounts before you can re-use the domain names for the next class. Because a deleted G Suite account is not removed in its entirety from Google's cache, each time you re-use the domain names, you might trigger an unusual activity notification from Google. Therefore, re-using domain names might require students to provide a valid phone number when they are creating users and logging in as those users.

Consider the following options for the domain name and phone requirements:

  • Provide new, unused domain names for each student in each class. Domain names can be purchased at a minimal cost and can be used for 1 or 2 years before renewal.
  • Purchase domain names once and re-use them for successive classes.
  • Allow students to use domain names that they own.
  • Provide access to a classroom phone number for students to receive a voice or text passcode, or have students use their own mobile phone numbers to validate their user accounts.
  • Remote students will need to use their own phone numbers to receive the passcode from Google and validate their user accounts.
